I've been off Tumblr for a long two weeks, and suddenly Mondays have switched from Red Pants to Red Thongs? Where did it start? (Not that I'm complaining) But I was just wondering if you knew. :)

It was reapersun again! Well, a bunch of her followers technically. Some fanartists (I’m not clear on exactly which artists, but there were quite a few of them working together) decided to covertly take over Red Pants Monday by submitting a bunch of red thong fanart.

Reapersun became enthused, so everyone jumped on the bandwagon. Now the trend is to do red thongs instead.

Edit: people are claiming that it’s not the “trend” now and that it was only for the one Monday.

Let us wait for next Monday and we shall see if there are still thongs.

John’s Red Pants/Red Pants Monday

The glorious individual responsible for the red pants is Reapersun (http://reapersun.tumblr.com/) who, many moons ago, responded to a request demanding: “draw more bebop!sherlocks or OR or draw a butt your choice”

Then continued to be sorry for having chosen butts when she had these incredible business cards printed:

She then distributed the business cards (I have one myself in fact) thus causing the red pants to make the leap from the internet to reality, and ultimately from minor amusement to full-scale meme. Other Sherlock fan artists began making red-pants tribute art, and Reapersun was so flattered that she started reblogging them, as well as doing more red red pants art herself. There is now a day dedicated to John’s red pants (Red Pants Monday).

Unrelated to the origin of this meme, it should be noted for my American brethren that “pants” are not the same in Britain as they are in America. In Britain, “pants” means “underwear” and “trousers” are what we would call pants. Thus, it is more proper to call them “red pants” not “red underwear.”
