and of course I couldn’t draw a hammerhead shark without drawing THE hammerhead shark
Sherlock Loves Bees
Though there is generally more subtlety to this meme than others, it is arguably one of the “oldest” Sherlock memes, as it is based on the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle canon and long-time Sherlock Holmes fans have been making reference to it for decades. The origin of the meme is in the Sherlock Holmes story “His Last Bow,” in which Doyle reveals that Sherlock, in his retirement years, moved to Sussex and took up beekeeping with the same fervor that he had once had for detective work. When asked about his hobby by Dr. Watson, Mr. Holmes had this to say:
“Exactly, Watson. Here is the fruit of my leisured ease, the magnum opus of my latter years.” He picked up the volume from the table and read out the whole title, “‘Practical Handbook of Bee Culture, with some Observations upon the Segregation of the Queen.’ Alone I did it. Behold the fruit of pensive nights and laborious days, when I watched the little working gangs as once I watched the criminal world of London.”
This propensity for apiology has never been mentioned in the BBC series, but the fandom seems to have tracked it down anyway. The most popular application of the bee meme to the BBC series is to color John’s stripey jumper yellow and make some exclamation about him looking like a bee and therefore incurring Sherlock’s interest (sometimes sexually). Examples to follow.
I know that I’m done with the Hustlin’ Holmes entry but this…this was too brilliant to pass up.

Misleading Moriarty
Misleading Moriarty is a Sherlock-specific derivative of this scary guy meme, which has long been popular on the rest of the non-Sherlock internets:

Since everything is, objectively, better with judicious application of Moriarty, the Sherlock fandom took this idea and did this with it:

The idea was inspired by Moriarty’s weirdly protean facial expressions, which more often than not don’t correspond with his lines in any way. The only explanation for this titillating tendency is that Moriarty is equal parts awesome, genius, and batshit crazy. As is consistent with the dialogue in the show, the majority of Misleading Moriarty memes include a variation on the “I will burn you. I will burn the heart out of you.” line from The Great Game, although any misleading phrase is fair game, just as with the original scary dude meme. Examples to follow.

Look at John, scampering along like a puppy…

THE HAUNTED POSTER OF SHERLOCK SERIES 2.THE CAT JUMPER MADE ME DO IT.
XD
This, really, was unavoidable.

The Crazy Kitty Jumper
Though the fandom has never hesitated to imagine John Watson in tacky jumpers, nothing has quite topped Pretty Snake’s crazy kitty jumper:

Though not actually specifically related to the series in any way, the sheer cracky absurdity of it has captured the imaginations of rabid fans everywhere, and ever since about mid-September fanart of John in the kitty jumper - and endless variations thereof - have plagued Tumblr. Though Pretty Snake had been listing similar sweaters on Etsy for more than a year before the fandom got hold of this one, the artist has since realized the sudden popularity of the item and has begun listing a similar one as “The Official Sherlock and Watson Crazy Cat Jumper.” As the artist uses found sweaters, the new ones are not identical to the original, but the trifling discrepancies seem to make little difference to the fans, as Pretty Snake has already sold several of them.
The cat faces are screen printed onto the sweater, and the three-dimensional glass eyes are subsequently attached. You can get your own in Pretty Snake’s Etsy shop here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/PrettySnake?ref=top_trail or visit her Facebook page here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Pretty-Snake/168483893191498
The (Not) Sherlock Prancing .Gif
(Entry posted upon request) The following .gif has been frequently used by Sherlockians to express every emotion from fear to excitement to insanity, often under the mistaken assumption that it is Benedict Cumberbatch. On other occasions, the Sherlockian in question knows full well that the man in the .gif is not Benedict Cumberbatch, but they use it anyway because, let’s face it, it’s really fucking funny to imagine Sherlock doing this:

In reality, this is a scene from a popular show called Black Books, in which the main character is apparently attempting to provoke a group of skinheads into beating him up so that he doesn’t have to do his taxes. The actor is Dylan Moran, and his resemblance to Sherlock is far from convincing when his back isn’t turned, but the suit and curly hair made him look just similar enough to confuse some people in this particular .gif. Special thanks to isntithateful for being the first to give me a clue for this entry, and to the multitude of other submitters for their helpful subsequent tip-offs.

“Flowers in a Box”
“Flowers in a Box” is a notoriously hilarious troll fanfiction, written in the tradition of “My Immortal,” a truly horrendous fanfiction penned (or rather, pounded haphazardly) in 2006. (http://encyclopediadramatica.ch/My_Immortal) though not specifically related to “My Immortal,” “Flowers in a Box” is undoubtedly just as horror-tastic. The critical difference being that the author is unapologetically trolling.
Published on fanfiction.net in August of 2011, “Flowers in a Box” consists of 14 chapters (most less than a page long) of barely comprehensible drabble based loosely on BBC’s Sherlock. The author reveals clearly in the last two chapters that the fic is a troll, as she reverts back to normal, comprehensible English and excuses herself by claiming that all prior foolishness had been a dream that John was having. The fanfiction contains numerous thinly veiled references, including Anderson’s dinosaur fetish, a suggestion of a Dr. Who crossover, and dialogue about a towel, referring to another of Martin Freeman’s movies The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
The author, samlicker113, is present on tumblr as Penworthy (http://penworthy.tumblr.com/) and is actually quite hilarious.
