Richard Brook is a constructed personality, Richard Brook’s age does not necessarily equal Moriarty’s age, but even if it did, the post is still wrong.

Also, I have the photo in the Casebook as well, and while JA——-Y 6 (January 6) is visible on the headstone, no matter what type of magnifier I use, the only other characters I can make out are a hyphen and half of a stem, possibly from a ,1 a 9, a 4, or a 7 (depending on the typeface), and it’s not clear what place in the date that number occupies. If you have a clearer image than the one actually printed in the Casebook I’d gladly look at it and reconsider, but it seems to me that the show runners are very deliberately hiding Sherlock’s birth year from us.

I want to turn my brother on to Sherlock. I live in the UK my brother is in the US. Is Sherlock streaming somewhere in the US like Netflix, Lovefilm or PBS? Thanks, Brad

Both seasons of Sherlock are now available through Netflix (which is a tremendously convenient service for many reasons) so that’s what I would recommend.

How long has Sherlock supposedly been dead? I heard that when the new series starts it's in the script that it will have been 3 years, but I've also heard 9 months. Do you know anything about this? Thank you.

Nothing about Sherlock’s period of absence in the show has been officially revealed yet. In the Doyle stories Sherlock was gone for 3 years, but since in the show he and John had only known each other for about a year when he “died,” whereas in the stories the two had been partners for something like ten years, many people assume that Sherlock’s absence will be truncated to flow better with the show’s timeline.

And no trouble at all.

Friendly reminder that somebody just made this up, because nowhere does it say how old either character is or how old they were when Carl Powers died.

Well, if we can take Richard Brook’s birth year as indication (taken from The Casebook), Moriarty was 13 when he killed Carl Powers (the one we believe is his first victim, we just know that it was Sherlock’s first ‘case’.)
Sherlock is a different matter since we don’t know his birth year, or at least I can’t find it. But he was probably younger than Moriarty and Watson, who is 37 years old when A Scandal in Belgravia happened.

Correct! However, Richard Brook’s birth year might not be the same as Moriarty’s. Richard Brook was a fabrication, but since Jim Moriarty is presumably Jim’s real name, if I were him and there was some legal debate regarding my identity, I wouldn’t link my innocent, actor persona to a year where there would have been an actual birth record for someone named “Jim Moriarty.”

Then again, maybe he’s just ballsy.

PSA to everyone arguing over Sherlock and Jim’s ages: Niether character stated their age in The Great Game, nor did Sherlock say how old he was when he began investigating Carl Powers’s death. All he said was “I was just a kid myself.” “Kid” is incredibly subjective.

The Casebook also does not provide Sherlock’s or Jim’s age or date of birth.

For added validation, the birth date of “Richard Brook” on his resume in the Casebook is 1976. Also in the Casebook and in the episode it says that Carl Powers died in 1989. Even if Jim used his actual birth year on his resume (which possible, but unlikely) he would have been 13 when he killed Carl Powers, not 11.

Also, to those of you claiming his date of birth was on the gravestone: you’re right, it was, but it was very deliberately cut off in the frame or blocked by flowers in every image taken of it, including those in the casebook and on Arwel Wyn Jones’s Twitter. The clearest image you can see is in the Casebook, and that image reveals only JA-(leaf)(twig)(leaf)(flower)-Y 6 (leaf) (leaf)(HUGE PIECE OF FOLIAGE)

Indicating January 6th, Sherlock Holmes’s generally-accepted birthday, which we have known about for several decades at least, but still no date.

uHH…Sherlock tells Watson that he was 8 when Carl Powers died and he was trying to convince the police to look more into the missing shoes but no one believed him.

He never said he was eight in the episode, what he said was “I was just a kid myself.” Trust me, I watched it several times specifically trying to validate either of these statements, and it’s not in the Caebook or in the episode. The only information given is the date Carl Powers died.

With the previous two seasons, the episodes aired once a week, so presumably series 3 will be presented the same way.

Hey, hello! Someone asked you about the "aah" sounds in Hounds of Baskerville a while back and you didn't know what it was? I'm almost 99% sure the sound is a fox vocalization, a mating call to be exact. They sort of shout or scream, it's rather ghostly and spooky, very dramatic. You can look it up; it's on youtube. I wanted to reply on the post, but the work computer is not letting me. That is all!

Thank you! I will gladly accept this explanation, because I’m still not exactly sure which “aah” sounds the original asker was referring to. There was a “suspenseful” sound effect inserted during some parts of the episode that sounded very much like an “aah” to me as well, and several animal vocalizations throughout, so who knows.

Here are some recordings of fox calls, if anyone is interested in comparing.

I stand behind every word of it, of course, but I’ve already gotten about eight strongly-worded messages attacking my semantics, and I can’t address every single person who wants me to clarify that I’m not talking about them specifically.

Let me counter your “woah” with a “woah” and point out that I certainly did not imply that all Johnlock shippers are at fault. Most people I know are Johnlock shippers, and from personal experience Johnlock shippers in general are perfectly respectful, decent, reasonable people, as I’ve said many times before.

All I said was “people,” by which I meant “an indeterminate number of nonspecific persons somewhere within the Sherlock fandom.”

Let me phrase it this way: most of the haters are Johnlock shippers, but most of the Johnlock shippers are not haters.

I don't use twitter, or have a tumblr account. I only keep up with 3 tumblr blogs and they are all dedicated to Sherlock. I come home from work tonight and see on 2 of the 3 blogs I follow people are begging the fandom to stop hating, and fighting! People are crying, and upset, and I don't know whats going on! Do you have any information on why suddenly our fandom is all upset?

I believe what you’re seeing is to be appropriately referred to henceforth as “people behaving like real douches because their ship is sinking.”

There is a possibility that John will be getting married this season (not a certainty, but a possibility) and for some reason, certain people think this makes it okay to send violent rage and death threats to Amanda Abbington, Martin’s wife, who has been brought onto the cast (possibly as Mary Morstan but possibly not, nothing has been officially announced).

It is not okay.

Sending death threats to anyone is never okay. Ever.

Also, Ian Hallard, Mark Gatiss’s husband, posted a tweet saying that he thought some of the Johnlock shippers were being “ridiculous.”

And now they’re tweeting violent hate to Ian Hallard as well.

It doesn’t matter what your opinion on Johnlock is: this is also not okay.

The cast and crew aren’t going to agree to continue making this show if people keep threatening their loved ones because of it.

I sincerely hope that no one following this blog is guilty of any of this absurdity, because if you are, you should be ashamed of yourselves.
